Republican States Sue Over Biden’s New Student Debt Relief Plan
Seven Republican-led states filed a lawsuit against President Biden’s latest student debt forgiveness plan, claiming the Education Department is acting without proper authority. The lawsuit targets a proposed rule to cancel loans for 27.6 million borrowers, potentially forgiving $73 billion immediately.
The move comes shortly after the Supreme Court blocked a previous $430 billion plan and an appeals court halted Biden’s SAVE program. The Education Department has already approved $169 billion in relief but says it will continue supporting borrowers struggling with repayment.
